Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) Tax Regime
Golden Visa holders who become Portuguese tax residents (183+ days/year) can benefit from Portugal's renowned NHR status for 10 years.
Key NHR Benefits:
- Tax-free foreign income: Most foreign-sourced income (pensions, dividends, royalties, capital gains) can be exempt from Portuguese tax
- 20% flat tax: Portuguese employment income taxed at flat 20% for certain high-value professions
- Duration: Benefits last for 10 consecutive years
Note: NHR regime is being reformed for new applicants from 2024-2025. Existing beneficiaries are grandfathered.
Fast-Track to EU Citizenship
Portugal offers one of the fastest paths to EU citizenship among Golden Visa programs.
Year 1-2: Initial Permit
Receive 2-year temporary residence permit after investment
Year 3-5: Renewal Period
Renew for 3-year period (only 7 days/year physical presence required)
Year 5+: Citizenship Eligible
